Sky has just launched Sky Go Extra, a subscription service enabling Sky customers to download TV programs and movies to their mobile phone or tablets and watch offline.

Sky Go Extra works within Sky’s existing app – Sky Go, currently used by 3 million customers. For £5 a month Sky subscribers will have access to TV programmes from channels including Sky Atlantic, Sky 1, Sky Living and Sky Arts, along with Hollywood blockbusters from Sky Movies. A selection of content will be available to download and watch offline using up to four mobile devices

Sky is clearly hoping Sky Go Extra will rival Lovefilm and Netflix, both of which offfer subscrption movies on demand, but have yet to offer offline playback.

Sky Go on PC, Mac (and obviously Xbox & Ps4) can be connected to a TV. However if you go for Q and Q Experience, you get far more channels via either a mini box or the PC/Mac app when at home. You also get the ability to stream all your recordings. What can I watch on Sky Go Extra?

Downloadable content is available from up to 43 Sky channels, but what’s actually available to watch offline varies depending on your existing Sky subscription. Dictionary for mac free.

Sky is offering an impressive selection of movies including: Avengers Assemble, Sherlock Holmes: Game of Shadows and Pirates in an Adventure with Scientists, along with the entire James Bond film catalogue, comprising of twenty-two films. But you can only watch and download offline if you’ve got a Sky Movies subscription.

Additionally (presumably because of licencing agreements) not all content on Sky Go is available to watch offline – so we could download House, Girls and Friday Night Lights, but not Fringe or Bones.

Movies are available for 30 days and TV programmes 7 days. Once you start watching, you’ve got 48 hours before the program expires.

What devices is Sky Go Extra available on?

Sky Go Extra is available on all devices compatible with Sky Go. Sky Go launched in 2011 enabling Sky customers to stream live and on-demand content to iOS a devices – including iPhone 3GS and above, iPad one and two and 26 Android smartphones. Customers with a 64GB iPad will be able to store in excess of 400 half-hour shows and more than 80 movies.

Sky Go Extra customers can register up to four internet-connected devices for Sky Go and view content on a maximum of two at any one time.

How do I get Sky Go Extra?

To access Sky Go Extra you need to be an existing Sky customer – not a Sky Go subscriber. Sky is offering a free 2-month trial, then it costs £5 a month and cancellation requires a 31 day notice period

What do we think of Sky Go Extra?

If you’re an existing Sky customer – particularly with a Sky Movies subscription, Sky Go Extra is certainly worth signing up too.

We’ve been uising Sky Go Extra and although the Sky Go app is a pleasure to use and we didn’t have problems downloading or playing back, we were a little bit disappointed that not everything is available offline.

If you’re more of a casual Sky user, you may not get your moneys worth and for our type of viewing, which is during the morning commute, there’s enough free content on BBC iPlayer. However we’ll be using the app more over the next few weeks and will update this piece accordingly.
