The Atomic Dashboard is an interactive chemistry resource and learning tool developed for the Mac by Bitwixt Software Systems. Used by educators, students, scientists, and the simply curious, The Atomic Dashboard features an interactive periodic table that lets you explore the chemical elements – their properties, periodic trends, history, and relevance to society. And more exciting, with its 3D Molecule Library, and its physics-based, 3D models of atomic orbitals, molecules, compounds, gases, and crystals, The Atomic Dashboard helps you explore the relationships between the behavior of atoms and molecules and their 3D structure. (See below screencasts and screenshots for examples.)

Atomic Dashboard (version 2.2 and higher) runs on macOS 11 (Big Sur)!

A Dashboard for Chemical Knowledge

Nearly 150 years ago, the distinguished Russian chemist Dmitri Mendeleev discovered previously hidden relationships between the physical and chemical properties of the elements and their atomic weights. Ordering pieces of paper representing the elements into a two-dimensional grid – a table – he grouped together elements with similar properties. Thus was born the periodic table.

Over the years, as the periodic table was expanded, it revealed the organizing principles of matter. In fundamental ways, it contains all of chemistry – in ways that even Mendeleev could never have dreamed. Master its secrets and you're on your way to mastering chemistry.

Yet, for much of that time the periodic table has remained lifeless – a collection of boxes mounted on the walls of desolate lecture halls and on the inside covers of musty textbooks.

The Atomic Dashboard Brings the Periodic Table to Life

The atomic dashboard model

Whether you're a student, a teacher, or someone who just wants to understand how the universe works, The Atomic Dashboard will connect you to everything you need to know about the building blocks of matter, the elements:

  • see what they look like in the macroscopic world
  • dive down to see what they look like in the atomic-level world:
    • explore how they are constructed at the atomic level
    • investigate how the atoms combine into different forms of the elements
    • discover how they combine with other elements to form compounds
  • look up their physical properties
  • determine how their properties depend on the structure of the atom (periodic trends)
  • learn about each element's abundance in the earth's crust, in seawater and in the solar system
  • delve into their history
  • keep informed of news about the elements in today's world, and see the molecules being discussed
  • link to interesting and informative resources about the elements on the web (e.g., see Harry Potter's Daniel Radcliffe sing 'The Elements' song or see sodium explode in water)

The Atomic Dashboard Lets You Explore a Vast Collection of 3D Molecules

Use The Atomic Dashboard to find, download and view interesting molecules from a collection of 25 million 3D models available in the PubChem database at the U.S. National Institutes of Health.

  • Search the PubChem database by molecule name, by chemical formula, or by searching for terms as wide ranging as 'vitamins,' 'hydrocarbons,' or 'detergents.' Download these molecules and inspect them using the unique 3D viewing tools in The Atomic Dashboard's Model Window.
  • Explore the bonding characteristics of molecules, including the covalent bonding structure ('3D Lewis structures') and the locations of lone pair electrons.
  • If you're taking organic chemistry, zoom in and examine the 3D features of organic molecules that are so important to reaction mechanisms.
  • Calculate the molecular mass and percent composition of the elements that make up a molecule by entering its chemical formula.

The Atomic Dashboard's user interface is dead simple – it's the periodic table. As you navigate The Atomic Dashboard, you are also navigating the principles of chemistry.

Reviews of The Atomic Dashboard from the Mac App Store

Amazing APP ★ ★ ★ ★ ★
by TeosDy

I love this app, it helps me out so much in my chemistry courses, one of my favorite features is the news button with fascinating advances in science mostly relating to some sort of chemistry. Also in relation to all the elements, it has a lot of very in-depth information including percent abundance, isotopes, who and when they discovered it plus much more. Furthermore, the 3d atom display is so helpful with understanding connections and how they function. Highly recommended, worth every penny. Realtimes for mac.

Extremely Useful and Lots of Fun ★ ★ ★ ★ ★
by Super Crow

The Atomic Dashboard is a tour de force. It is exceptionally easy to use and is packed to the brim with useful information. The information provided for each element in the periodic table is very detailed and presented in an intuitive and informative fashion. The app has plenty of detail for scientific use but is also accessible and user-friendly enough that students of all ages will enjoy using it. It also includes a very fast and responsive 3D Molecule viewer and the ability to download complex molecules of interest from an online database for viewing. Perhaps my favorite feature is the collection of current news articles involving elements and molecules, for each one you can click on the molecule and load it into the 3D viewer - this would be tremendously useful in the classroom and for those homework assignments where the teacher assigns each student an element and asks them to find a news article about it.

One of the things that has impressed me is the speed of the application - all of the information is available immediately with no long load times. It is very fluid and seamless to use. Every time I use it I am impressed with the way the information is presented and the obvious thought and care that went into building the app. Extremely well done!

Note from the Developer:I promise that I did not write this review, nor did anyone that I know (as far as I know). But I agree with every word. Thanks for the kind words, 'Super Crow.'

Excellent App and support ★ ★ ★ ★ ★

Don’t often write reviews, however, I was so impressed with this app and the service from the developer that I thought it was only right to review it. Good in-depth periodic table with loads of different properties you can display including Atom radius, electronegativity, electron affinity, melting and boiling point etc, etc, etc. You can download various molecules and view them in 3D and there is also a mass calculator. I required a molecule which I couldn’t find and they promptly sorted the fix out.

This is a GREAT application ★ ★ ★ ★ ★
by schnoman

I taught chemistry for 45 years at both the high school and college level and have invested a great deal of my own money on software. The Atomic Dashboard is one of those applications that is definitely worthwhile purchasing. For a teacher it is a great presentation tool and visualization aid, for students it is a great way to investigate and learn some pretty solid chemistry.

SUPER ★ ★ ★ ★ ★

I have been studying materials science and engineering and was looking for an interactive Periodic Table of the Elements that provides all important information OFFLINE. With the Atomic Dashboard I have found it, and my expectations were far exceeded by the scope of the program. The animated models of crystal structures and orbitals are a special feature. It's all there, with little to be desired. Definitely worth the money, and I recommend it to chemists, physicists, etc., as it will be useful even far beyond their studies.

While this app has been extremely useful and worth the money- even in the short few days I've had it- I feel like this app is a more powerful tool than I realize and I am not sure how to unlock its full potential. Maybe it just takes time… still, I rate this app perfect- thanks

Really nice and fairly straightforward app. It keeps chemistry at the forefront of my mind and hopefully will benefit my undergraduate studies.

Impressive 3D Visualisations of Atoms and Electron Structures ★ ★ ★ ★ ★
by Nukenomics

I downloaded The Atomic Dashboard after trying to explain to my school age kids what electron and atomic structures really look like. My younger kids loved the 3D visualisations of gas molecules bouncing around in a box. And it has helped my teenage daughter to grasp the complexities of s,p,d,f electron orbitals. These kinds of visualisation make atomic and nuclear concepts much more graspable when you can see what is going on. My daughter discovered a new function tonight - clicking on the valence electron structure description of an element activates another 3D model - you can zoom in all the way to the nucleus of an element and zoom all the way back out to see the electron orbitals and cloud densities - you can even use a slider to separate out the different s,p,d,f orbitals - pretty amazing really.

The great things technology will do for science education… ★ ★ ★ ★ ★
by Ray Kang

What a great tool for visualizing complex molecules - I've been looking for something like this. Chemistry can be a difficult subject because it is such a visual experience…….imagining how electrons, atoms, and molecules behave from qualitative descriptions in textbooks can be a challenge. As I imagine how science education will be affected by technology in the future, I can fairly say that science will benefit greatly by applications like this. Great job to the folks at Bitwixt for this app.

The Atomic Dashboard App

What a helpful app!!! ★ ★ ★ ★ ★
by Dfor

When you first start using it it can be a little confusing. Sit down and figure it out! Trust me, it's worth it! I'm taking organic chem this semester and I wish I would have found this app at the beginning. Very helpful visuals that you can easily move around to view in a 3-D sort of way. I've looked up over twenty different chemical formulas and have yet to find one that isn't in the 3-D molecule library. Also has a very neat periodic table that can be viewed in many different ways. Very stoked on this!

Excellent app ★ ★ ★ ★ ★

The most complete periodic table app on the Mac App Store. The developer has confirmed to me that he will add other rich features, so that it becomes even more of a point of reference for all students or enthusiasts. Five stars deserved.

Still loving it! ★ ★ ★ ★ ★
by GingerGeek

The atomic dashboard is still the app that is always open when I'm working on chem. And now that I'm about to start organic, I'm excited about the new 3D molecule library. I've already had fun searching for funky molecules. The first one I found? Benzodiazepine, which we just studied in neuro. The lone pair feature is nice - helps make sense of vsepr, which was a little fuzzy the first time around.

Capable Tool ★ ★ ★ ★ ★
by CaptChem

Quite a capable tool -- I can see uses at many levels of teaching chemistry. It goes far beyond just the typical periodic table info. Cheers for the 3D atomic orbitals to demonstrate electron configuration, and the 3D Lewis structures are quite unique and should be helpful to general chemistry students learning VSEPR. Our organic chemistry students should find the 3D molecule library very helpful.

Very impressed! ★ ★ ★ ★ ★
by TheYorkies

Whoever is studying any level of chemistry or is just curious, this is the best app to use. Wow I can't even list all the different functions that it has. The description is very humble compared to how useful this app is. I'm studying for my chem 217 final and this is one of the most helpful tools I've been using to understand each element. Very very very detailed. AMAZING.

Science Nerd or Not this is Great! ★ ★ ★ ★ ★
by Grudini

Where was Atomic Dashboard when I was in school? I'm not a science nerd yet I LOVE this app! It makes the complicated and esoteric simple and relevant. Looking forward to my son taking high school chemistry so that I can share this amazing tool with him. If every high school supplemented their text book with this app the USA's standardized science test scores would soar.

Excellent App ★ ★ ★ ★ ★
by Megabunny18

My son purchased this app for me as a birthday present. I teach High School Chemistry. I love it. The videos from you tube are an excellent touch that gives more insight to the element in a different way. I like that you can see the configurations and the models. I have my students memorize most of the periodic table and this is just the ticket for the information that is relevant. Using the bp/mp reference points will be helpful for students when determining unknown elements during labs. The electron configuration models, with a lot of my students being visual learners, will also help them see and differentiate the elements.
