Xiaomi announced its latest smartphone the Xiaomi Play a couple of days back. The Mi Play is the first ever phone to be powered by a rather unknown MediaTek Helio P35 SoC apart from obviously being the first one to be announced in the Mi Play lineup.

Talking about the chipset, it is a mid-range SoC designed to “create advanced dual-camera smartphones with AI-enhancements and rich connectivity.” MediaTek states that the chipset is made with TSMC 12nm FinFET production process which is said to “offer superior performance without taking a toll on the battery.”

The benchmark scores which have just made their way to the internet, reveals that the performance of this chipset is slightly higher than the aging mid-budget Snapdragon 625 SoC with a score of 86,352 points. The score is, however, lower than that of the latest mid-rage SoC from Qualcomm, the Snapdragon 636.

The MediaTek Helio P35 is an Octa-Core SoC with eight cores are all Cortex-A53 cores clocked at 2.3GHz, quite like the 2.2GHz eight cores of Snapdragon 625. MediaTek states that the P35 may offer a better performance and battery life than its direct competitor because of the 12nm FinFET production process compared to the 14nm FinFET production process.

This new chipset supports both LPDDR3 and LPDDR4x RAM giving manufacturers the flexibility to choose the one as per the budget. Talking about optics, the processor supports up to a 25-megapixel single sensor or dual 13-megapixel + 13-megapixel sensors with simulated Depth of Field (bokeh) effect. “MediaTek’s Electronic Image Stabilization (EIS) is paired to the Rolling Shutter Compensation (RSC) cleverly mitigates warped (‘jello effect’) video when capturing fast action or panning,” announced the company.

In terms of connectivity, the SoC dual-band Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 5.0, VoLTE, and ViLTE. The Helio P35 supports FHD+ displays and 20:9 aspect ratio. It also supports AI-based Face ID (Face Unlock), smart photo album, and multi-frame noise reduction.
